soon I leave Alphaville

Although Tunisia is an ancient land, I have been residing in a three-star dystopia. In four days, however, I return home. Bis'slema, Tunis. I hope to see you sometime in the winter.

this man guards compatriots

Were it not for brave civilians, like this well-mustachioed man, the TGM train, which travels from Tunis to La Marsa, would be overrun by male teenage hooligans. Such hooligans are dangerous, as many locals and tourists will attest.

satellite TV

The ubiquitous dishes help the locals circumvent the state-run channels.

Celtic Tigers

I met a troupe of Tunisians in Monastir (in the Sahel) performing the Irish River Dance to electro-Irish-Arabic-mash ups. I was thoroughly confused but loved every minute of it. I do not think they consider themselves absurd, but they were good sports and considered me a flabbergasted, laughing tourist.

kabaamunbeena

I can only guess the vowels. I can only guess the meaning.

Arsch washing

My hotel room has two ways to clean yourself after defecation: Tunisian and Western. On the left, we see a dispenser of toilet paper (or the sandpaper that passes for such.) On the right, we have a hose. Fortunately, the water from the hose is not too cold. There are benefits to living in a desert country.

Gladiators in El Jem

The ruins of the amphitheater in El Jem, Tunisia are superior to the Roman Colosseum, I maintain.

Deutschland

I have not been home to Deutschland for many years. It looks quite different than it did in the 80s. I include pictures.

The tree (a sycamore?) was a baby when I left.  Quite surprising.

washingtonians

My idiotisch travel agent flew me from the Falklands to Washington before Deutschland to Tunis. I have been to this country before and am always surprised by how much the people look different from their television and film stars. For those of you who have never seen real Americans, I sincerely offer you the enclosed true images.

Gus the Bad Blogger Pledges Reform

I hereby promise to blog more. I understand blog to be a verb.

Next week I leave for Tunisia. I will try to post musings from that country. Below is my only current impression of North Africa. Good-bye Falklands for two Monate.

I have to say it

I've kept my mouth shut for two years. My dear friend Frida, Princess Reuss, Countess of Plauen, was remixed back in 2006, and her classic hit was given a dubious make-over. Still, it's not the new version of the song that vexes me, but the video. Has Northern Europe been stuck in 1982? Let's see Frida now. Beauty, style, and proper bloodlines never grow old. Even if you marry into the family.
